Brain-friendly teaching.
Utilizing biotechnology and modern medical imaging techniques, neurobiology has seen rapid development in recent years, significantly enhancing our understanding of brain function and learning.
Thanks to this research, we know:
- Which factors do not positively influence learning (an environment of continuous testing, teaching based on traditional teacher lectures)
- Which environment positively influences learning (a sense of security and stress avoidance, student-centered learning, goal setting)
- The impact of music creation (playing an instrument) on increasing working memory and synchronizing both brain hemispheres, which significantly boosts cognitive abilities
- Conditions necessary for developing creativity
- Bilingualism and its impact on brain plasticity
That is why, in our school, we focus on education based on scientific evidence. This approach is based on implementing educational solutions that have been scientifically validated and proven effective. They are commonly used in modern science, medicine, and business.
Personalization
At LAS Academy, we transform the model of mass education through personalized learning.
By reducing class sizes, it becomes possible to adopt an approach that considers students’ individual preferences and aptitudes. Through immediate feedback, we successively increase internal motivation and are able to adapt to students’ current needs, responding promptly to their evolving requirements. Thanks to personalized learning, we can work effectively with gifted students who, unfortunately, do not receive sufficient attention in the mass education model and often become bored, gradually losing their desire to learn.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge is fleeting, but skills last a lifetime.
Even skills unused for years are easy to refresh, allowing one to return to full capability. In our school, we strongly emphasize skills, and from a long list, it is worth mentioning at least: playing an instrument, fluent command of a foreign language, self-presentation skills, confident use of mathematics, and physical fitness. We want our children to enter adulthood with a wide range of skills, as it will be much harder for them to acquire these later. This does not mean that knowledge is unnecessary – quite the opposite. We appreciate its value, but we are moving from superficial learning, i.e., memorizing facts, to deep learning, which requires complex analysis, connecting facts, and identifying differences and similarities. Consequently, this allows for much better consolidation and retention of knowledge, while also developing important skills for us, such as higher-order thinking and understanding cause-and-effect relationships. As a result, we provide students with broad and practical knowledge and skills.
No Grading
Research confirms that summative assessment (assigning grades) is demotivating for students in the long run.
We draw a clear line between assessment and feedback, focusing solely on the latter. We create conditions for the development of internal motivation, without using unnatural substitutes in the form of punishments or rewards. We have developed our own system for providing feedback and “measuring” the growth of our students’ skills and knowledge.
No Textbooks
The core curriculum does not specify how it should be implemented.
Textbooks can limit a teacher’s possibilities. If the foundation of 21st-century education is to be a flexible approach, diverse sources, different perspectives, varying learning paces, diverse student interests—i.e., personalized learning and creativity—then the only logical solution is to move away from textbooks. Of course, a teacher can use a textbook, selecting interesting elements, but in our school, it does not form the basis of lessons.
